SUMMARY:Workshop for planning green areas in the old town of Cēsis
DESCRIPTION:On May 6, Cēsis Municipality is organizing a scenario workshop for planning green areas in the old town of Cēsis.\nThe public outdoor space in the old town of Cēsis faces several challenges, yet it holds great potential to become an attractive and vibrant area in the town. To enhance the livability of the old town, Cēsis has implemented several initiatives, such as the “Summer Street” project, which closes traffic in the old town on summer weekends. However, it has been observed that pedestrian flow in the old town remains low during the summer. This aligns with the findings of the Life LATESTadapt project, which identified the old town as a significant heat island. Consequently, on hot summer days, the outdoor spaces in the old town are uncomfortable due to a lack of shade and green infrastructure elements.\nThe goal of the scenario workshop is to discuss the most suitable nature-based solutions for the old town, their cost-efficiency, and their impact on the urban environment. This includes reducing the heat island effect, improving stormwater management, enhancing air quality, and creating a pleasant environment for both residents and visitors.\nEvent time: May 6, 2025, at 10:00 AM Location: Youth House, Rīgas Street 23, Cēsis\nThe workshop is part of the development of the “Cēsis Town Green Infrastructure Development Plan” and supports broader efforts under the LIFE LATESTadapt project — a Latvia–Estonia initiative co-financed by the EU LIFE Programme, the State Regional Development Agency, and Cēsis Municipality.\nParticipation is by registration only, with a deadline of April 28.
