Nature-Based Solutions for Stormwater Management – Call for Registration for the Final Event in the Seminar Series

Registration is open for the upcoming seminar on August 6–7 “Nature-Based Solutions for Stormwater Management: Theory and Practice”! (registration open until Auguts 2nd).

📅 On August 6, during an online seminar, experts will explain the impact of climate change on precipitation patterns and stormwater management, discuss the importance of nature-based solutions in urban environments, the latest developments in stormwater modeling and technical standards, opportunities for sustainable drainage and stormwater reuse, and share practical examples from Latvian municipalities.

📍 On August 7 in Latgale, participants will have the opportunity to see examples of nature-based solutions in Daugavpils and Rēzekne in person. During the site visits, participants are scheduled to visit the Esplanāde Wetland Nature Trail, the central beach of Lake Lielais Stropu, and the Zeimuļi and rain gardens in Rēzekne to learn about solutions that help manage stormwater while improving the quality of the urban environment.

The seminar will offer an opportunity not only to learn about the latest approaches to stormwater management but also to gain practical experience and discuss with industry experts solutions that could be implemented in municipalities and other development projects.

How Do Nature-Based Solutions Help Protect Water Bodies in the Face of Climate Change? – Answers in Theory and Practice

Registration is open for the upcoming seminar on July 23–24 “Nature-based solutions for the protection of the sea and water bodies: theory and practice”! (registration open until July 19).

📅 On July 23, experts will discuss online the link between climate change and water quality and rising water levels, the role of nature-based solutions in protecting coastlines and water bodies, coastal erosion processes, and ways to mitigate their impact. The seminar will also feature practical examples demonstrating how nature-based solutions help strengthen climate resilience and improve the quality of the aquatic environment.
📍 On July 24 in Kurzeme, participants will have the opportunity to visit several implemented solutions and projects in the Liepāja area, including the Liepāja Lake area, the Ālande River walking trail in Grobiņa, and other locations where natural processes are utilized as part of sustainable regional development.

A series of seminars on nature-based solutions will be held

The Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development in collaboration with the Latvian Association of Architects invites local government specialists, architects, planners, environmental experts and other interested parties to participate in a three-part seminar series titled “Nature-based Solutions: From Knowledge to Experience in Nature.” The seminars are organized as part of the LIFE LATESTadapt project, in which VARAM participates as a project partner.

The aim of the seminars is to educate local government and private sector specialists, including planners, architects, landscape architects, and engineers, regarding the implementation of nature-based solutions in urban environments, as well as adherence to the principles of the New European Bauhaus.

The seminars will take place in June, July, and August, with each seminar focusing on a specific topic related to nature-based solutions and a more sustainable urban environment, taking into account the risks of climate change. The first day of the seminar will take place online, featuring research, best practices and case studies from various experts, while the second day will take place in person as a field visit to examples of thematic projects in a specific region.

Urban green spaces play a vital role in mitigating the urban heat island effect and improving climate resilience in cities. But how can satellite data help us monitor and plan them more effectively?

Join us for a full-day international online workshop bringing together researchers, spatial planners, and Earth observation experts to explore the latest advances in urban green space and heat island mapping using freely available Copernicus satellite data.

The workshop is structured in two parts:

• Morning session (09:00–12:00 EET) — Presentations by international experts on satellite-based urban green space and heat island monitoring, Copernicus data applications, and experiences from projects across Europe
• Afternoon session (13:00–16:00 EET) — Hands-on training in heat island and green space mapping using freely available Earth observation data

Who should attend? Spatial planners, researchers, municipal professionals, and anyone interested in using satellite data for urban climate adaptation and green infrastructure planning.

The workshop is organised by the Institute for Environmental Solutions (IES, Latvia) as part of the LIFE LATESTadapt project.

Workshop for Nature Based Solutions in the Baltic Sea Region on 25 March

We would like you to save the date for a PEER learning workshop for Nature Based Solutions in the Baltic Sea Region. Interreg BSR project CityBlues– Blue-green nature based solutions for climate change adaptation and citizen wellbeing is having its consortium meeting in Tallinn and as TalTech is a partner in both CityBlues and LATESTadapt we saw the opportunity to have a twinning event to share experiences how similar challenges have been addressed in different projects and learn from the different pilots. Peer-learning workshop is planned on the 25^th of March 2026 in Tallinn (venue tbd).

Preliminary programme includes methods developed in both projects, like Berlin Water Competence (KWB) centre will speak about NBS monitoring guidance, CityBlues consortium will present the Joint Operational Model for mainstreaming catchment scale NBS and we can discuss the guidance for using native species in NBS – presenting LATEST guidance with reflections from Danish and Finnish approaches. Additionally we plan a peer learning workshop where we show the pilots and facilitate a roundtable of “curious questions – why, how and what”so we could learn from the experiences of others. For LATESTadapt partners, it will offer a great opportunity to see how cities much more advanced in implementing urban green infrastructure projects like Aarhus (DK), Malmö (SE), Tampere (FI) and Stavanger (NO) tackle the same issues we face in our challenge in implementing NBS for Estonia and Latvia. Seminar – focused on the challenges of implementing nature-based solutions and watershed-based planning in cities

On March 24, in collaboration with the municipalities of Tartu, Viimsi, and Aarhus (Denmark), and with support from the INTERREG CityBlues, LIFE LATESTadapt, and Biodiversa+ BioReStorm projects, we are organizing a seminar focused on the challenges of implementing nature-based solutions and watershed-based planning in cities.

At the seminar, we will hear, among other things, how watershed-based planning is carried out in Aarhus, Denmark, and how watersheds have been defined and adopted as a tool in Viimsi. In addition to presentations, we will explore the division of roles in the planning process and work in groups to find nature-based solutions to practical problems.

Seminar “Heat Risk Challenges and Solutions in the Urban Environment”

On October 16, two important events dedicated to landscape quality and urban adaptation to climate change will take place at Koka Rīga, Krāsotāju iela 12.

The seminar “Heat Risk Challenges and Solutions in the Urban Environment” will take place over two days – on October 16, environmental and urban planning experts will share the latest research, data, and practical solutions for reducing heat waves in the urban environment, while on October 17, a walking tour will showcase nature-based solutions for heat risk prevention in the center of Riga.

In the afternoon of October 16, the closing event of the 9th session of the European Council’s Landscape Award national selection will take place, where eight projects from Latvian municipalities and organizations will be presented, which are competing for the opportunity to represent Latvia in the international competition. At the end of the event, the winner of the national selection will be announced, who will continue to participate at the European level.

The event is organized by the Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development in cooperation with partners in the environmental and landscape sector.

The Knowledge Transfer and Experience Exchange Workshop “Planning Nature-based Solutions for Climate Resilience from Local to Regional Level” is organised in cooperation between the LIFE LATESTadapt project and the Horizon 2020 project IMPETUS, in which BEF-LV is also a partner.

The programme foresees:

LIFE LATESTadapt approach and experience in DBR planning and the development of urban greening plans;
Experience of the IMPETUS project in planning climate change adaptation measures in the Zemgale region;
Discussion on the most effective policy and spatial planning tools for climate resilience.
Target audience: representatives of Latvian municipalities and regions, researchers, practitioners and others interested in DBR and greening planning.

Riga workshop

On May 8, the Riga City Council City Development Department will organize an educational workshop for 89th Secondary school’s 8th grade class on the implementation of nature-based solutions to mitigate climate change risks and promote climate resilience. This workshop will take place within the framework of the Riga Urban Greening Plan 2027-2031.

During the workshop, it is foreseen to educate students on the issues of climate change, biodiversity and ecosystem services, and the role of nature-based solutions in addressing various challenges. During the workshop, students will map the school surroundings and various challenges (heat, water accumulation, rainwater drainage) and how these challenges can be solved with nature-based solutions. Students will work in groups and develop concrete solutions for the school area. At the end of the workshop, experts will provide feedback to students on the proposed solutions.

Workshop for planning green areas in the old town of Cēsis

On May 6, Cēsis Municipality is organizing a scenario workshop for planning green areas in the old town of Cēsis.

The public outdoor space in the old town of Cēsis faces several challenges, yet it holds great potential to become an attractive and vibrant area in the town. To enhance the livability of the old town, Cēsis has implemented several initiatives, such as the “Summer Street” project, which closes traffic in the old town on summer weekends. However, it has been observed that pedestrian flow in the old town remains low during the summer. This aligns with the findings of the Life LATESTadapt project, which identified the old town as a significant heat island. Consequently, on hot summer days, the outdoor spaces in the old town are uncomfortable due to a lack of shade and green infrastructure elements.

The goal of the scenario workshop is to discuss the most suitable nature-based solutions for the old town, their cost-efficiency, and their impact on the urban environment. This includes reducing the heat island effect, improving stormwater management, enhancing air quality, and creating a pleasant environment for both residents and visitors.

Landscape and urban planning workshop

Valmiera Municipality invites residents of Valmiera and Pārgaujas Quarter (the area covered by Zvaigžņu, Meža, Nākotnes and Stacijas Streets), as well as representatives of institutions and companies operating in this area on 22 April at 9.30-15.30 at the Valmiera Pārgaujas State Gymnasium for a landscape and urban planning workshop on the environmental challenges of the Pārgaujas Quarter.

In 2023 and 2024, studies have been carried out in Valmiera on the problem areas of Valmiera related to climate change impacts – heat waves and flooding caused by heavy rainfall. The Stacijas Street area, bordering Meža, Nākotnes and Zvaigžņu Streets, has been identified as one of the significant areas affected by such challenges, where both overheating and flooding during extreme weather events are observed.

The impacts of climate change and associated extreme weather events can be mitigated by incorporating various nature-based solutions in urban design. These are solutions that simultaneously contribute to human well-being (e.g. bicycle parking, benches, car parking) and protect and restore threatened natural ecosystems.

The Landscape and Urban Planning Workshop will co-create solutions to the environmental challenges of the Pārgaujas Quarter, addressing the different needs of the area’s users. The participation of interested users and their opinions are very important for the future development of the area, as the solutions developed by the participants will contribute to the thematic master plan “Valmiera State City Green Infrastructure Development Plan” currently under preparation and will form the basis for the municipality’s future actions for the development of this urban quarter.

The workshop is expected to provide an educational introduction to the climate change and urban development challenges of the Pārgaujas Quarter. It will also introduce the concept of nature-based solutions, which of them and how they can be applied to improve the Pārgaujas Quarter. The workshop participants will also go on a short nature tour of the area, listening to the Valmiera Municipality Development Authority specialists’ assessment of the various development issues and needs of the area. Afterwards, participants will work in groups, create a vision for the development of the area in an environmentally friendly way and select the most suitable nature-based solutions and locations for their deployment.

The municipality invites interested parties to read more explanatory information on the environmental challenges and nature-based solutions of the territory and to actively participate in the workshop on 22 April!
